This tutorial guides you through the process of setting up a sync between AudioPen and Notion using Make.com.

This tutorial goes with the post The Third Brain where I go into details about why you might want to try this.

If you're using Obsidian, I made a plugin that does most of the work for you, read more about it here.

Prerequisites

Before starting this tutorial, ensure you have the following:

  1. A Notion account - Sign up at notion.so if you don't have one
  2. A Make.com account - Create an account at make.com if you haven't already
  3. An AudioPen account - Sign up for AudioPen at audiopen.ai

Once you have all these accounts set up, you're ready to begin the integration process.

Setting up Notion

1. Create Notion Database

  • Make a new database page in Notion.
    • I called it AudioPen Notes, you can call it anything you want.
  • Create a database list or card view inside

2. Get the Notion API Key for Make.com

  • Follow this guide to get your API key for an Internal Connection: Notion - Add Database to Make
  • Copy and Save the API key, but don't add it to Make.com yet.
  • Give the Make.com integration in Notion a specific name (e.g., Make for AudioPen) and upload a recognizable image.
    • Any image will work, it's just so we can easily find it again later.

3. Add a Make.com connection to your Notion database

  • Open the AudioPen Notes page in Notion.
  • Click on the ... menu in the top right corner
  • Select Connect to and find the Make for AudioPen connection you just made.

Configuring Make.com

1. Import Make.com blueprint

  • Sign in to make.com, or create a free account.
  • Download the blueprint [[make-audiopen-notion-blueprint.json]]
  • Create a new make.com scenario
  • Click on the ... more button in the toolbar and select Import Blueprint.
  • Import the blueprint file you just downloaded.
  • Select Notion Internal as the connection type and give the connection a name (e.g., "AudioPen Notion").
  • Paste your Notion API key in the box and click Save
  • Once saved and connected, link it to the database you made in Notion:
    • At Database ID click on search, leave the Query Search box empty and click OK.
    • It should find your AudioPen database automatically.
    • If you get an error, you might need to re-link Make.com to Notion. See Notion databases visible in Make for instructions.
  • If all went well and you have a Database ID, click OK to save it.
  • Go through the remaining 4 Notion modules in the scenario and choose your Notion connection from the dropdown.
  • Open the Webhook module at the very left side of the scenario
  • Click Add
  • Give it a useful name, like AudioPen Notion Webhook
  • After generating the webhook, click on the button Copy address to clipboard
  • The webhook URL looks like this: https://hook.eu2.make.com/ab97f2f0a143hgfdghjd3e5fc3f4e833
  • Click 💾 Save in the bottom toolbar and turn the scenario on with the big toggle switch.

Connecting AudioPen

  • Navigate to AudioPen
  • Make sure you're logged in
  • Click the settings icon at the top right of the screen:
  • Scroll down to the section Beta Program and enable the toggle
  • In the Integrations section, click Set up integrations
  • Add your webhook URL:
    • as an automatic webhook
    • (optionally) as a manual trigger, if you want to be able to update notes manually

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues during setup:

  • Ensure all API keys and webhooks are correctly copied without extra spaces.
  • Double-check that you've given Make.com the necessary permissions in Notion. See Notion databases visible in Make for instructions.
  • Verify that your Notion database is correctly linked in the Make.com scenario.
  • If AudioPen isn't sending data, check that the Beta Program is enabled and the webhook is correctly set up. You'll need a paid account to use webhooks with AudioPen. I paid for it and I'm glad I did.

I didn't make AudioPen, I just really love it. If you sign up to AudioPen with an affiliate link from this article, I'll get a little kickback at no cost to you.
